IASC 2008 Call For Abstracts

IASC 2008 Call for Abstracts

Due to the high level of interest and the large number of requests for an extension to the abstract deadlines we have decided to extend the date for submitting abstracts to 14th January 2008.

All participants are invited to submit abstracts for presentation of papers or posters on any aspect of conference themes, or for panel sessions, symposia or workshops focused on specific issues. Papers may address theory, policy, practical work, empirical research, describe cases studies, or any aspect of commons issues listed below.

• Governance and institutional change in relation to commons
• ‘New Commons'
• Management of traditional natural resource commons (e.g. water, fisheries, forestry, pasture, soil, agricultural systems, wildlife, biodiversity)
• Global commons
• Theoretical and methodological developments in Commons research
• Resource management
• Case studies

Submission of abstracts
It would be helpful to us in our administration of the conference to know which of the conference themes you feel your paper is addressing, so please indicate this on your submission. But, we also recognize that some papers or panels may address more than one theme. Therefore, please indicate a first, and a second choice theme, if appropriate.

All abstracts should be e-mailed to iasc2008@glos.ac.uk in word or text format by 14 January, 2008 along with the required submission form (click to view) and should be drafted in the following way:

• Title (Arial pt. 14, Bold, align center)
• First Author (font Arial pt. 12, Bold, align left), co-authors (font Arial pt. 12, Italic). Initials and surname in that order; multiple authors must be separated by a comma.
• Body of the text: a maximum of 300 words (Arial, pt. 12, align left).

All submissions must include the author's full name, affiliation and contact details, the title of the paper, a 300-word abstract and an indication of the theme, or themes the paper is addressing.

Poster submission

Submit an abstract to present a poster. Posters can be used to present research results, case studies, or provide information about practitioner initiatives relating to the management of the Commons. Abstracts are due 14 January, 2008.

Poster submissions should be drafted in the following way:

• Title (Arial pt. 14, Bold, align center)
• First Author (font Arial pt. 12, Bold, align left), co-authors (font Arial pt. 12, Italic). Initials and surname in that order; multiple authors must be separated by a comma.
• Body of the text: a maximum of 200 words (Arial, pt. 12, align left).
• All submissions must include the author's full name, affiliation and contact details, the title of the paper, and a 200-word abstract

Please email John Powell at iasc2008@glos.ac.uk if you have any questions regarding posters. Posters can be on any topic related to the conference themes. Guidance on posters will be provided to authors on acceptance of abstracts.

Panel sessions

Where appropriate we would encourage the submission off several papers focused on a specific theme or topic. These can be delivered in a single panel session.
A panel session can be defined as follows:
• several papers focused on a central theme
• maximum 2 hours duration
• an event that will run in parallel with other panel sessions

The majority of papers at the conference will be presented in panel sessions of between 4 and 6 speakers. We are allocating two hours for panel sessions. It is up to the organizer of the panel to determine how to fill those hours (in terms of number of speakers, etc.) but there should be time allowed for questions from the audience and some time for discussion. We want to be flexible in allowing you to have fewer or more speakers as the subject requires, or more time for discussion.

The following information is required:
• an identified organizer/chairman
• an abstract summarizing the aims of the panel session and how each paper will contribute to the overall aim (abstracts should be a maximum of 500 words and include names and affiliations of the organizer and individual presenters)
• planned outcomes (if any)
• an abstract for each paper to be presented (using the template form as described above)
• abstracts for panel sessions are due 14 January, 2008.

We will want individual abstracts from each participant in a panel as we will need to review contributions from panel speakers in the same way as other abstracts. BUT, it would be helpful if all the abstracts came through the panel organiser, so it is clear to us that they are intended to fit together as a group.

Workshops, Symposia, Round-table Discussions
We encourage consideration of a range of alternative activities, such as workshops, round-tables, and symposia. These are defined below:
Workshop
- a practically-oriented and focused session with a
teaching/training element
- 1 to 4 hours duration
Symposia
- several speakers focusing on a particular issue or theme
- provision for wide range of formats/delivery styles (e.g. might
integrate paper presentations with group work, discussions,
or debate)
- potential for more time than in a panel session (from 2 to 4 hours)
Round-table discussion
- focused discussion on a topic or issue of interest with a facilitator
to stimulate audience participation (1 – 2 hours duration)

Individuals or groups that would like to organize a workshop, symposia or round table are asked to submit a brief abstract (maximum 500 words) outlining their ideas and/or aims of the event by 14 January 2008.

Multiple Submission Guidelines

In order to keep the participation at the conference as wide as possible, the Programme Committee discourages multiple submission for single-authored paper/poster presentation. Most professional associations and funding agencies require that a person presents a paper/poster at the meeting. Allowing multiple single-authored paper/poster presentations by one person would reduce the possibility for other participants to obtain funding to attend the conference. Therefore, the Programme Committee will follow the guidelines outlined below regarding multiple submissions:

• we CANNOT accept two or more single authored papers from the same person;
• we CANNOT accept more than two papers that have the same author as one of the co-authors;
• an author presenting a paper at a panel CANNOT be the discussant for the same panel; and
• an author presenting a paper at a panel CAN chair a panel.

GUIDELINES FOR PANELS:

Total Length: 2 hours
Chairman: each panel requires an identified Chair who will introduce speakers, ensure speakers and discussions are kept to time, and manage the discussion sessions
Number of papers: flexible - but we suggest between 4 and 6 to allow time for discussion
Presentation: we suggest 15 minutes maximum to allow time for discussion
Discussants: where discussants are used they should not exceed 5 minutes per paper
Audience: there should be opportunity for questions and discussion from the audience
